The Fourteenth Decade: Illinois State University, 1987-1997

by Mark Wyman
Normal, Illinois (1999)

The Fourteenth Decade is the most recent of the four decadal histories intended to update Helen Marshall's 1956 centennial history, Grandest of Enterprises.  Dr. Mark Wyman documents this  "relatively quiet" period by focussing on changes in campus technology, instability in campus administration, and tensions in shared governance.   This was a period of reduced state support for higher education, increased campus diversity, and expansion of graduate program offerings.  The Fourteenth Decade covers the administrations of three presidents: the end of the Lloyd Watkins administration, the administration of Thomas Wallace, and half of the David Strand administration.

Dr. Wyman serves as Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at Illinois State, specializing in labor, immigration, and frontier history.  He continues to research and teach on campus.
