A Place of Education: Illinois State University, 1967-1977by Roger J. Champagne A Place of Education documents the late 1960s and early 1970s. This was a period of continued high growth in terms of campus enrollment and development as well as a period of coming to terms with the new role of the institution as a multi-purpose university. This was also an era of turmoil, as unrest that swept across college campuses throughout the country in response to the Vietnam War and fight for racial equality also swept across the Normal campus. The 1969-1970 academic year, dubbed "A Year of Disruption" by author Roger Champagne, was particularly contentious. The decade ended with the relative calm of the President Budig administration. A Place of Education was the second of the so-called "decade" histories, short books updating Helen Marshall's centennial history of 1956. Champagne, now Professor Emeritus of History, followed this decade book, his first, with The Thirteenth Decade in 1989.
