Psychology: Tests and Measures

Milner Library maintains three collections of educational and psychological tests as well as numerous reference materials for locating tests and test reviews. If Milner Library does not own the test you need, obtaining a copy of the test instrument can be difficult and frustrating. In many instances the only source of a test instrument is its author or publisher. In some instances test instruments can be found in journal literature (tip: search PsycINFO and Health and Psychosocial Instruments). For a helpful primer on finding tests and test information see Finding Information About Psychological Tests from the American Psychological Association.

Obtaining reviews of tests

The following sources provide reviews of tests in addition to basic information. In some instances, sources include complete reviews. In other instances, sources provide a list of articles and books that contain test reviews.

Mental Measurements Yearbook
Floor 2 Reference Z 5814 .P8B932
Sometimes referred to as "Buros" because it is published by the Buros Institute at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Print source. Reviews of commercially published tests.

Mental Measurements Yearbook (online)
Online version of the print source.
Sometimes referred to as "Buros" because it is published by the Buros Institute at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Covers 9th to 17th editions, not the entire print set. When new versions of tests are added to the online database, references to older versions are deleted. For information about superceded tests, use the print version of this title. Caution: When attempting to email or print entries in MMY online, select "ASCII Full Text (if available)" in the citation manager at the bottom of the entry screen if you want to include full text of reviews with your email or print. Search Now

Test Critiques
Floor 3 Shelves BF 176 .T418
Print source. In 11 volumes. Use the index in the last volume to locate tests throughout the series.

Commissioned Reviews of 250 Psychological Tests
Floor 3 Shelves BF 176 .C65 2000
Print source. Reviews of tests published during the 1990s but not covered in Mental Measurements Yearbook or Test Critiques.

Obtaining test instruments

Finding basic information and reviews of tests is a relatively painless process using the sources identified above. However, getting test instruments can be frustrating.

A key determinant in whether a test instrument might be available is whether the test has been commercially published.

If a test has been commercially published, it might be available at Milner Library. If not available at Milner, about the only way to obtain the test would be to order a copy from the publisher ... commercial tests cannot be ordered from other libraries via interlibrary loan.

If a test has not been commercially published, it might be available in the Tests in Microfiche collection at Milner, in a book that includes a compilation of test instruments, or in an appendix or addendum to a research article or document.

TEST INSTRUMENTS AVAILABLE IN TEST COLLECTIONS AT MILNER LIBRARY

Educational and Psychological Test File
(Inquire at the Floor 2 reference desk.)

The Test File is a collection of approximately 600 commercially published educational and psychological tests arranged in 50 broad subject categories. Tests in this collection are included in the Milner Catalog. Tests may be checked out for use in the building. Tests cannot be removed from the library. Tests cannot legally be copied without prior permission from the publisher.

Tests in Microfiche
(Microfiche cards are located in the Storage Basement facility. Inquire at the Floor 2 reference desk for assistance.)

Tests in Microfiche is a collection of approximately 1,300 tests selected from the professional literature. These tests are not commercially published. Tests in this collection are not included in the Milner Catalog. To identify materials in this collection use the print indexes located in the Floor 2 reference collection at LB1131 .T55X. You can also generate a list of tests in the collection by searching Tests and Measures in the Social Sciences: Tests Available in Compilation Volumes, a Web site compiled by Helen Hough of the University of Texas at Arlington. Tests in this collection may be used without further author/publisher permission.

Special Education Tests
(Inquire at the Floor 2 reference desk)

Milner Library houses a collection of commercially published tests purchased by the Department of Special Education. Use of these tests is restricted to students enrolled in certain Special Education classes. Authorized students may borrow tests in this collection for up to two weeks.

TEST INSTRUMENTS AVAILABLE IN COMPILATION VOLUMES

Non-commercial test instruments are sometimes included in books about tests or in special print compilations typically organized by subject. For example, persons interested in test instruments related to marketing and consumer behavior might consult the book entitled Handbook of Marketing Scales: Multi Item Measures for Marketing and Consumer Behavior Research.

Listed below are a few such compilations available at Milner Library. For an extensive list of test compilations see Tests and Measures in the Social Sciences: Tests Available in Compilation Volumes, a Web site compiled by Helen Hough, Health Sciences Librarian at the University of Texas at Arlington. To locate copies of compilations identified through Hough's Web site, search the Milner Catalog.

TEST INSTRUMENTS AVAILABLE IN RESEARCH LITERATURE

Some authors include test instruments in appendices or addenda to their journal articles, books, book chapters, research reports, or dissertations. Locating these can be tricky. Use research databases available on the Milner website. Search techniques vary depending on the database and the database vendor.

PsyINFO (Ovid)

In the Ovid version of PsycINFO available through Milner Library, conduct a search for the title or type of test you seek. Then conduct a keyword search for the word "appended." Combine your results sets with the AND operator. Your results will include citations to articles with some type of materials appended, oftentimes test instruments.

Example:
Say you are interested in finding instruments that test post traumatic stress disorder. Try the following search.

Conduct a keyword search for post traumatic stress disorder. Use the mapping function. Map your search to the subject term Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and conduct the search.

Conduct a keyword search for the word appended. Do not use the mapping function.

Combine the two retrieval sets using the AND operator.

Review your results, and use FindIt to locate the articles or books of interest.

PsycINFO has a convenient Tests & Measures limiter as well. Using the Tests & Measures limiter restricts your results to articles or books about a test instrument and eliminates articles and books about research that uses an instrument but are about some other topic. Using the Tests & Measures limiter does not limit results to articles or books that include copies of test instruments.

ERIC (Ovid)

Conduct a search for the title or type of test you seek. Then use the More Limits feature. In the Publication Types limiter, select Tests or Evaluation Instruments. Your results will include both articles and documents about tests. Authors rarely include test instruments with their articles. However, some authors include test instruments in appendices to their documents. Consequently, it may be helpful to further limit your search to RIE (ERIC Documents).

ERIC (FirstSearch)

The FirstSearch interface for ERIC does not include a Publication Type limiter. Instead, enter the title or type of test you seek one search box. In another search box enter either 160 or tests questionnaires and search by Record Type.

ERIC (Department of Education)

When searching the Department of Education interface, use the Publication Type(s) limiter, selecting Tests/Questionnaires. Consider using the Full-Text Availability limiter as well to limit your results to documents available in full text and likely to have test instruments attached.
