Education: Statistical Sources

Common Core of Date (CCD)
From the National Center for Educational Statistics. CCD is a comprehensive, annual, national statistical database of information concerning all public elementary and secondary schools (approximately 95,000) and school districts (approximately 17,000).

The Condition of Education
From the National Center for Educational Statistics. The Condition of Education is an indicator report, summarizing the health of education, monitoring important developments, and showing trends in major aspects of education. The 65 indicators included examine relationships; show changes over time; compare or contrast sub-populations, regions, or countries; or assess characteristics of students from different backgrounds and types of schools.

Economic Diversity of Colleges
Gives users access to information like the percentage of students who applied for federal student aid or received Pell Grants, family-income distribution, average educational-loan debt, and other statistics for about 2,700 institutions, including community colleges, and public and private four-year universities and colleges. Users can view individual profiles of institutions and compare institutions based on 128 different criteria.

Education Census
The Census Bureau has education data related to Educational Attainment, Field of Training, School Costs, School Enrollment, and other characteristics crossed by education.

Education Finance Statistics Center
From the National Center for Educational Statistics. If you are seeking education finance information for elementary/secondary public or private education, this National Center for Education Statistics web site should help you. Included are links for questions about Postsecondary Surveys, Funding Opportunities, and Student Financial Assistance.

Grapevine: A National Database of Tax Support for Higher Education
Produced at the Center for Higher Education & Educational Finance at Illinois State University. Provides a national database of tax support for higher education. Individual state reports include current fiscal year and previous fiscal year state tax appropriations for operating expenses and a 50-state summary table showing state totals for the current year, the previous two years, a ten-year figure, and percentages of change over one, two, and ten years.

InfoNation
Infonation allows viewing and comparing statistical data, including educational attainment, for all UN member states. You can select up to five countries at a time for comparison.

Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS)
The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) is a system of surveys designed to collect data from all primary providers of postsecondary education. Surveys address institution-level data in such areas as enrollments, program completions, faculty, staff, and finances.

Interactive Illinois Report Card 
This site facilitates comparisons using the state school report card data.

Just for the Kids
Allows the user to compare schools with similar demographics, identify high-performing schools, and see what the high-performing schools are doing.

National Center for Educational Statistics
This is the host site for many education related government statistics. Their server includes .PDF files for the complete text of numerous statistical publications.

National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education
The National Center prepares and makes available reports of   issues regarding opportunity and achievement in higher education.  Links to the reports are provided 

OECD Education Database
The OECD (Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development) Education Database provides internationally comparable data on key aspects of the education systems. OECD Member countries co-operate to gather the information, to develop and apply common definitions and criteria for the quality control of the data, to verify the data and to provide the information necessary to interpret the submitted data.

Public Elementary-Secondary Education Finance Data
From the U.S. Census Bureau.  Education finance data include revenues, expenditures, debt, and assets (cash and security holdings) of elementary and secondary public school systems. Statistics cover all states, including the District of Columbia, and are available on an annual basis. File formats for downloadable data may vary by year.

Public School District Finance Peer Search School Year 1995-96
From the National Center for Educational Statistics. This searchable database will allow you to compare the finances of a school district with its peers (those districts which share similar characteristics).

SchoolMatters
"In response to an expressed need by the education community for an impartial, transparent analysis of the nation's educational data, Standard & Poor's (S&P) created School Evaluation Services.  Since 2001, the mission of School Evaluation Services has been to provide educators, policymakers, business leaders, parents, and taxpayers with an objective, independent analysis of school and school district data to allow them to implement more effective school reform policies."  The numerous easty-to-read graphs makes this a good place to start for anyone interested in comparing schools and communities.

Urban Institute
The Urban Institute and six universities have founded the Center for Analysis of Longitudinal Data in Education Research (CALDER). "CALDER will mine the longitudinal databases emerging as educational systems are subject to increased accountability, especially under the No Child Left Behind Act."  Comprehensive databases are currently available for Florida, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Texas, and Washington state.

U.S. Doctorates in the 20th Century
"This report describes the history and growth of doctoral education in the United States from 1900 to 1999 and shows changes in the characteristics of persons who complete a doctoral education."

World Data on Education
From UNESCO. Includes profiles of national education systems, using the information included in the reports on the development of education, supplemented with data from other sources. The National Reports can also be accessed can be considered as one of the main sources for comparing educational data across countries and over time, and a useful tool for the exchange of information and experience in the field of education.
