ERIC (Department of Education interface)
ERIC (Ovid interface)
ERIC (FirstSearch interface)
The Department of Education interface is free to all users and is the most recently updated. A disadvantage of the DOE interface is that it does not currently connect to Milner's Find It service. The Ovid interface may be preferable for searches requiring extensive boolean logic.
The ERIC database includes more than 1.1 million citations going back to 1966. More than 107,000 full-text non-journal documents (issued 1993-2004) are now available for free.
ERIC Documents on microfiche are available on Floor 1. Microfiche readers are also available on Floor 1, and microfiche copiers are available on Floor 2. Using the microfiche is the only way to access ERIC Documents produced before 1993
Education Abstracts
This is probably the best source for new articles since ERIC's most recent update only includes around 100 journal titles.
Education Abstracts indexes and abstracts articles of at least one column in length from English-language periodicals and yearbooks. English-language books relating to education published in 1995 or later are also indexed. Abstracting coverage begins with January 1994. Full-text coverage begins in January 1996.
- Produced by the National Rehabilitation Information Center (NARIC).
- The types of documents described in REHABDATA include research reports, books, journal articles, and audiovisual materials. Milner will not own everything cited.
Dissertations & Theses
- Electronic edition of Dissertation Abstracts covering the complete range of academic subjects appearing in dissertations from over 1,000 accredited institutions since 1861. Citations from 1980 forward also include 350-word abstracts written by the author. Free downloadable full text for dissertations is available beginning in 1997 (users must have current ISU ULID and password). Updated monthly.
- Dissertations not available through this service can be ordered through Interlibrary Loan. Any dissertations received must be picked up in Milner Library's Interlibrary Loan Office. Be aware that not all library's will loan dissertations.
Current Research@
- Search citations and abstracts of dissertations and theses completed at Illinois State University published in UMI's Dissertation Abstracts database.
- The full text of most dissertations can be downloaded free (users must have current ISU ULID and password).
Other Databases
Think about your topic, two other databases that are frequently useful are PsycINFO (a Psychology datagase) and LexisNexis Academic Universe ( useful for both the Legal Research section and the News section. When using the News section, click on the Guided News Search tab to gain more control over your search.). Two general, interdisciplinary databases that are frequently useful are Academic Search Premier and WilsonSelectPlus.
