Frequently Asked Questions at the Circulation Desk

Questions?  Please call the Circ Desk at 309-438-7321

Can I borrow a laptop from Milner Library?

Yes!  We have laptops available for students, on a first come, first served basis.   The laptops are available for a 3 hour loan.  The laptops have wireless access.   You may request headphones, mice, and other peripherals for the laptops.  You may NOT take the laptops or peripherals out of Milner Library.  Please ask at the Circulation Desk for a laptop.

Can I borrow an iPod from Milner Library?

Yes, we have iPods available for students for a 3 hour loan.   The iPods contain the iTour library tour and are programmed with an orientation to Milner Library and its resources.   Please enquire at the Circulation Desk for the iPods.   You may NOT take the iPods out of Milner Library.

How many items can I borrow from Milner Library?

As many as you can carry!  The maximum number of items that you can borrow on your library account is so high that most people don’t come close.   “How many different due dates can you manage?,” is generally the best answer.  We do limit the number of items borrowed from the Teaching Materials Center to 25 items because these are very high use items.

What materials do not circulate?

Reference books, journals, magazines, newspapers, and microforms.

Where can I make photocopies? How much do photocopies cost?

Photocopiers are available on the north side of the library, just beyond the Circulation Desk and the New Books Shelf.   There also are two copiers and one color copier in the hallway that leads back to the computer lab.  Photocopies cost 10 cents per page or 8 cents per page, if you put money on your Redbird card.  There are Redbird kiosks at the column in front of the Circulation Desk and in the computer lab.   If you do not have a Redbird card or have forgotten to bring yours, you can purchase a copy card at the kiosk.

Can I request for an item to be held for me at the Circulation Desk?

Yes, request the item through our online catalog, and we’ll pull the item and hold it for you at the Circulation Desk.   We pull online requests once per day, so the item may not be available for immediate pick-up.

What do I do if the item I want isn’t available at Milner Library?

We have borrowing agreements with a number of libraries in Illinois.  Check the I-Share catalog (HYPERLINK) to see if another library has an available copy.  If so, you can place an online request for the item, and we’ll notify you via e-mail when it’s ready for you to pick up at the Circulation Desk.   If the item isn’t available at any I-Share library, place a request for the item through ILLiad (HYPERLINK), and we’ll  attempt to borrow the item from a library outside of Illinois.

How long can I check out an item borrowed through Interlibrary Loan?

The loan period depends on the library that lends the item.  Generally, most libraries lend items for 2 to 4 weeks.  Renewals may be requested online from My Account on Milner Library’s catalog or from your ILLiad account.

How do I find and/or request DVDs and videos?

Search for DVDs and videos sing our online catalog.  To limit your search to only DVDs and videos, click on “More Limits” in the lower right hand corner of the catalog.   Then limit your search results to “Videos/Films” as the primary format to display a list of only DVDs and videos.

If Milner Library does not own a DVD or video, you may request the item through ILLiad.  However, most libraries do not lend audio-visual materials.   Please be aware that we may not be able to fulfill request for audio-visual materials as quickly as we fill requests for books and journal articles.  We always accept recommendations for purchase, of course.

The library catalog says the item I want is located at North Storage or Basement Storage.  Where is that?  How do I get the item?

North Storage is our facility for long-term storage of older materials.  Basement Storage is our closed stacks for infrequently requested materials.  The locations are not open to the public, but you may request items via the online catalog for pick-up at the Circulation Desk.   Items requested from Basement Storage are generally available for pick-up the same day as the request, and items requested from North Storage are generally available for pick-up within a couple of days.  You will be notified via e-mail when items are available for pick-up.

I’m not able to come to Milner Library in person and pick up library materials.   What options do I have?

Faculty, graduate students who are engaged in research away from campus, and distance learners may designate another person to pick-up and check out library materials on your behalf.  The designated person must have current library privileges.  Please ask for a “proxy patron” form at the Circulation Desk.  Undergraduate students are not eligible for proxy patron service.
