Finding Statistics - Resources for Statistical Information

Suggested Resources:

The following resources are recommended to help you find statistics.  Take some time and explore the resources.  Links to webpages, databases, and data sets will open in a new window.  Don't forget about the print sources!  There is still much valuable information that is only available in print.  Sometimes this is exactly the information that you need.

General Statistical Sources - online

Statistical Abstract of the United States - Census Bureau:
Statistics on political, social, cultural and economic conditions in the United States. Includes information on: agriculture, business, communications, housing, courts, education, elections, energy, geography, environment, government finances, employment, health, law enforcement, manufacturing, population, prisons, travel, social services, spending, science, transportation, and wealth. 

U.S. Census Bureau - Commerce Department:
The U.S. Census Bureau collects and provides data about the people and economy of the United States. This site provides information about the conditions of the United States, states, and counties. Additional surveys conducted between censuses are also included.  

Current Population Survey (CPS) Census Department and Bureau of Labor Statistics: 
Demographic characteristics of households and families in the United States. 

Statistical Universe - Congressional Information Services:
Subscription-based access.  Indexes and abstracts printed federal, state, and international statistical publications, as well as selected business and professional publications.  

Fedstats (Federal Interagency Council on Statistical Policy): 
More than 70 federal government agencies produce statistical reports. The Federal Interagency Council on Statistical Policy provide access to the full range of statistics and information produced by these agencies for public use. 

STAT-USA: 
Subscription-based access.  A service of the U.S. Department of Commerce, this source indexes business, trade, and economic information from the Federal Government, incorporating over 300,000 reports and statistical series.

Fedworld Provides a comprehensive central access point for searching, locating, ordering and acquiring government and business information. Maintained by the United States Department of Commerce.

Statistical Resources on the Web Provides links to a wide variety of sites with statistical information. Topics covered include: agriculture, business and industry, cost-of-living, demographics, economics, education, energy, environment, finance, foreign government data sources, foreign trade, government finances, health, housing, labor, military, politics, science, sociology, tourism, and transportation.

Berinstein Research Site Provides an alphabetized directory of online statistics sources, sorted by subject.

General Statistical Sources - in print

There are a wide range of helpful statistical sources available in print. Following is a list of recommended sources located in Milner Library.

American Statistics Index (1974 - present)
Indexes statistics in government documents issued by federal agencies. Statistics may be in any type of government document -- articles, reports, Congressional hearings, etc.

Statistical Abstract of the United States 
Annual compilation of statistics on the social, political and economic dimensions of the United States. The index references table numbers, not page numbers. While this is also available online, the print version is often easier to use.

State and Metropolitan Area Data Book
Provides social, political, and economic data for local areas within the United States.

County and City Data Book 
Compilations of census data for counties and large cities. Includes data on population, employment, income, and financial, educational and vital statistics.

Vital Statistics of the United States
 Produced annually and consists of three volumes: Marriage and Divorce, Natality and Mortality. Provides time series and cross-sectional data on birth rates, causes of death, and characteristics of married and divorced individuals.

Historical Statistics of the US - Colonial times to 1970
Provides comparative statistics on the political, social and economic organization of the United States. Includes information on population, migration, labor, agriculture and recreation. Includes time period, year, and subject indexes.

Illinois Statistical Abstract
Provides data on a range of social, economic, and political topics in Illinois.

Statistical Yearbook (Annuaire Statistique)
Provides economic, population, and social  information about all countries and areas of the world.

Subject-specific Sources - online

In addition to sites that offer general statistics there are also sites that offer statistics specific to a particular subject area.

Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) - Department of Labor:
The Bureau of Labor Statistics is an independent national statistical agency that collects, analyzes, and disseminates essential statistical data related to labor economics.  

Infonation:
InfoNation is an easy-to-use, two-step database that allows you to view and comparestatistical data for the Member States of the United Nations. The user can select up to seven countries, and then use the data menu to select statistics and other data fields. 

National Center for Education Statistics - Department of Education: 
The National Center for Education Statistics is the primary federal entity for collecting and analyzing data that are related to education in the United States and other nations.

American Public Opinion Index (1981 - present) 
Indexes public opinion polls and surveys that appear in a variety of periodicals.

Reproduction of poll and survey results indexed in the American Public Opinion Index.

Digest of Education Statistics 
Data collected and disseminated by the Department of Education.

Data Sets - online

Due to their size, data sets are almost always available in electronic format.

National Election Studies: 
Data sets on voting, public opinion, and political participation.

Lijphart Elections Archive: 
A collection of district level election results for about 350 national legislative elections in 26 countries. 

Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR): 
Subscription-based service.  Data sets on an expansive array of social science topics.  A librarian will retrieve the data set for you.  

United States Census Bureau
In addition to compiled statistics, the U.S. Census Bureau provides numerous data sets, often labeled "detailed files."
