Midwest Center for Teaching With Primary Sources
The Midwest Center for Teaching with Primary Sources (MCTPS) is an exploratory effort initiated by the Educational Outreach Division at the Library of Congress. Funding for the Center comes from the Library of Congress to expand the Teaching with Primary Sources program throughout the United States. Opportunities to conduct research related to the use of primary sources in teaching and learning as well as to lead state-wide professional development efforts are provided by the MCTPS in the states of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin.
The MCTPS is located in Milner Library on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Illinois State prepares more teachers and administrators than any university in Illinois. Nearly one of every eight teachers in the classrooms of Illinois public schools holds a degree from Illinois State. The University is recognized nationally as the second-largest producer of teachers among American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education institutions.
The MCTPS has developed a professional development continuum that parallels that of Illinois State University's Teaching with Primary Sources (ISU-TPS) program. The ISU-TPS professional development program has been tested over a variety of audiences and meets the objectives of the National Teaching with Primary Sources program. Institutions that partner with the MCTPS will be provided a thorough professional development guide for conducting local training initiatives.
The MCTPS is looking for regional associates from school districts, universities, library systems, other institutions or individuals who are interested in using primary sources in education or providing training on the use of primary sources. The Center will offer two types of sub-awards to successful applicants. One type of sub-award in the amount of $2000 - $5000 will be granted to faculty who want to revise their syllabus to include the use of primary sources from the Library of Congress or conduct research related to teaching and learning through the use of primary sources . The second type of sub-award in the amount of $2000 - $15000 will be granted to those willing to conduct professional development opportunities for teachers and library information specialists. Proposal Submission
The MCTPS received additional funding in June, 2008 to continue its efforts throughout the Midwest. This extension affords the opportunity to expand and initiate additional subcontracts until December 31, 2009. We are accepting proposals and will continue to do so until all of our funding has been awarded to successful proposals. If interested in submitting a proposal, please contact the MCTPS office prior to submission. For proposal guidelines see RFP.
